Two Cases of Labour in Which the Tetrachloride of Carbon Was Used

he had used the tetrachloride of carbon instead of chloroform. The first patient got it undiluted, and during the first stage of the ansesthesia violent uterine action came on; but on pushing the action of the drug still further, the patient went off into a state of syncope. In this case he found it quite impossible to hit off the exact amount required so as to avoid excessive uterine action or syncope. In the second case (one of uterine inertia), he gave it mixed with an equal quantity of chloroform, and it seemed to bring on effective explusive action at once. He added, however, that these two cases could not be supposed to be sufficient to warrant the forming of general conclusions on the subject; and that he hoped to lay before the Society some more experiments with the tetrachloride of carbon in cases of labour.
